If the remains of the fallen city and the river sands
in Kota Tinggi are capable of speech, they would
definitely sing of the glory: the Johor Sultanate was
founded by a prince of the Sultan of Malacca! In the
time Shakespeare was making his name, this was
where Tun Sri Lanang, the State Treasurer, penned
the Malay Annals. The Kota Tinggi city rises as the
Malacca Sultanate falls. Old Johor rose to become
the centre of world trade, as if repeating the glory of
Malacca once upon a time. The Johor empire stayed
steadfast and stood tall despite the Sultan of Johor
being captured a number of times and even when a
tragedy struck, shaking the whole of Nusantara. The
tragedy of a love story!
The Dowry Island refers to Pulau Penyengat, an island
that was once of Tanah Melayu under the rule of Johor-
Riau empire, and now it falls within Indonesia’s borders.
This island was bestowed to Raja Hamidah, Raja Haji
Fi Sabilillah’s princess, from Sultan Mahmud Shah III
of Malacca as a dowry for his fourth wife. This island
boasts a great history, and had once been the centre of
knowledge and often welcomes Nusantara’s scholars Pulau Mas Kahwin /
including HAMKA. Now there are only fishermen in
villages, the once great history can no longer be seen, The Dowry Island
just as no more Sultans breathe in this land. Genre: History
