The Walk


      Mr. John W. (Paw Paw) Gibbs was born on January 28, 1930 in Tiplersville,
      Mississippi. The eldest child of L.B. Gibbs Sr. and Gennie L. (Blake) Gibbs. John
      was called home for eternal rest on December 1, 2020 at the age of 90 years old.
      Being born and raised in the South during the 30’s and 40’s, John knew the value of
      hard work from a very early age. The eldest of twelve children, John was often found
      working in the fields with his father; tending to farmland that provided food and
      shelter for the family.
      During John’s early years in Mississippi, he met and married the love of his life;
      Easter Gillard. John and Easter migrated to Flint, Michigan and raised five
      children.
      After serving our country in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953, John was employed
      by General Motors in Flint, Michigan where he worked for 45 years.
      A farmer at heart; when not working John could be found siting on his front porch
      or tending to his flourishing garden. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman.
      John loved traveling, sightseeing and listening to the blues. A natural comedian;
      John would definitely keep you laughing. Many sought guidance and wisdom from
      John who was honest, caring loving and an all-around great man.

      John leaves to cherish his memories: 1 son: Danny Ray (Sharon) Gibbs and 2
      daughters: Betty Ann (Daniel) Baxter; Lois Gibbs all of Flint, Michigan. 11
      grandchildren: Tanyanika Gibbs of North, Carolina;Tanika Gibbs; Danielle Gibbs;
      Tereva Gibbs; Bridney Gibbs; China Gibbs; Jamahl Gibbs; Rickey Gibbs of Flint,
      Michigan; Steven (Loreal) Hartwell of Saginaw, Michigan; Sammy Gibbs Jr. of
      Novi, Michigan and Danny Ray (Tonya)Gibbs Jr. of Murfeesboro, Tennessee. 29
      great-grandchildren. 4 sisters: Liller Crum of Flint, Michigan; Wilma (Rod) Colom
      of Walnut, Mississippi; Mary (Vernell) Owens Sr. and Catherine Gibbs of
      Tiplersville, Mississippi. One brother: L.B. (Dorothy) Gibbs Jr. of Memphis,
      Tennessee and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Including
      special friend: Oliver Louis of Flint, Michigan.
      John was preceded in death by his beloved wife: Easter (Gillard) Gibbs whom he
      loved and cherished. 2 sons: Rickey Gibbs and Sammy Gibbs. His parents: L.B. and
      Gennie Gibbs. 3 brothers: Young Infant Gibbs; Jimmy Gibbs; Elex D. Gibbs and
      Edward L. Gibbs. 2 sisters: Eva L. Gillard and Gennie Luster.
