In late 2010 a group of young practitioners established an affiliated international
chapter office of Architecture for Humanity, an US-based non-profit provided
design services to the communities in need and hired a shared office spaces
of 230Sq.foot to accommodate the growing need of spaces for our full-time
personal. The focus of their work was community development by creating a
network of professionals, who were willing to lend their time and their talents to
help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their services. They believed
and practiced participatory approach, knowledge sharing and free-thoughts.
The design concept of the office interior revolved around these values. However,
the challenge was to incorporate this idea within a space of approximately
220Sq.foot of area, located in one of the most expensive commercial area. Thus,
an open-plan office environment served a dual purpose it made the space flow
so that it looked bigger than it actually was and secondly, the space encouraged
collaboration, sharing of ideas, transparency and the opportunity for mentorship.
As one enters the office, they will be greeted by the young, energetic professionals
working on a slightly raised wooden platform. However, the view doesn’t stop
there it continues to the next space on the right which serves both as a meeting
and study area on separate occasions. Recycled wood, metals were used in this
interior. A vibrant light blue colour was used on two walls to create a serene
and calm environment while white-coloured furniture made it look light and
less crowded. Green-plants were introduced in every possible corners, to create
a soothing breathing-space. Thus an attempt was made to create a warm,
welcoming and experiential space that flattens any hierarchies and encourages
co-working and brainstorming the next big idea. 20
