                                                   tion and use of a work. Creative Commons licenses are appropriate for
                                                   documents, images, and certain other resources where the author of the
                                                   resource is the copyright holder and the terms of use are both simple and
                                                   unchanging. The Creative Commons license family provides licensing on
                                                   four separate dimensions to form six different license types, with their terms
                                                   detailed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/, plus a public domain
                                                   license. These dimensions are:


                                                             Attribution (BY):  Others  who use the work  in the manner
                                                            requested by the author, but not in a way that suggests endorse-
                                                            ment. Permission is required to use the work without assigning
                                                            credit or implying endorsement.


                                                            ShareAlike (SA): Others may copy, distribute, display, perform,
                                                            and modify the work, so long as all modified work is distrib-
                                                            uted on the same terms. Permission is required to distribute the
                                                            work under other terms.


                                                             NonCommercial (NC): Others may copy, distribute, display,
                                                             perform and modify the work unless NoDerivatives is also cho-
                                                             sen for any noncommercial purpose. Permission is required for
                                                             commercial use.


                                                             NoDerivatives (ND):  Others  may  copy,  distribute,  display,
                                                             and perform only original copies of the work. Permission is
                                                             required to modify the work.


                                                             Public Domain: This allows all users to distribute, share, and
                                                             modify an existing work without restrictions. The Creative Com-
                                                             mons license is ideal for digital repositories because it makes the
                                                             assumption that a work can be reproduced and shared. Since one
                                                             of the primary purposes of a digital repository is to allow for the
                                                             distribution of digital materials, requiring authors to acquire a
                                                             Creative Commons license for inclusion within a digital reposi-
                                                             tory allows the organiza tion to solve a number of distribution-
                                                             related challenges. More over, the Creative Commons organization
                                                             itself  provides  a  wizard  at  http://creativecommons.org/license/
                                                             to help authors select the specific type of Creative Commons
                                                             license that  best reflects how  they want their materials used.
                                                             For example, to make the most restrictive license that prohib-
                                                             its crea tion of derivative works, restricts all commercial use, and
                                                             requires attribution as requested by the creator, the symbol and
                                                             textual representation would be:
