Some areas of the human body cause many Western patients to feel a sense of shame-- the
male and female genitalia, the urinary system, the excretory system and the female breasts.
Patients should always be allowed to cover up these areas, except when they are being
examined. The doctor should always tell the patient before examining these areas, and ask
the patient’s permission. When the patient is uncovering these areas, the doctor should look
away, or even leave the room until the patient has removed the clothing.

1. Doctor: Hello, Jane. What can I do for you?
2. Patient: Um, I have got a stomachache.
3. Doctor: How long have you had it?
4. Patient: Since yesterday.
5. Doctor: Where does it hurt?
6. Patient: Um, it’s here, on the right side.
7. Doctor: What kind of pain is it on the right side?
8. Patient: Uh, a sharp pain.
9. Doctor: How long does the pain last?
10. Patient: Um,usually a few seconds.
11. Doctor: Is there anything else you feel at the same time you have the
pain?
12. Patient: I’ve been throwing up.
13. Doctor: Is there anything else that makes it better?
14. Patient: Sitting still.
15. Doctor: Ok, let me examine you, please.
