Conserving a a a a Vast Forest
of Wildlife and Carbon
Stretching across northern Canada from the the the Yukon to Newfoundland and and Labrador the the the the country’s boreal forest forest is is the the largest intact forest forest remaining on on on Earth This vast interconnected landscape provides habitat for for for billions of of birds every spring gives room for for moose and and and and herds of of of of of woodland caribou to to to roam and and and stores 208 billion metric tons of of of of carbon carbon dioxide—the equivalent of of of of 26 years of of of of global carbon carbon emissions For thousands of of years First Nations communities thrived within the the the richness and and and and sustenance of of the the the boreal as as the the the the the land’s original stewards But as as as demand for resources grew their their their their authority over their their their their traditional territories was challenged their their their their economies were destabilized and their their their their immemorial way of living was threatened Chief Clarence Easter leads the Chemawawin Cree Nation in in in Manitoba Canada Canada which is partnering with TNC Canada: “We belong belong to to to the the the land land land the the the land land land doesn’t belong belong to to to us I’ve always lived o o o o o o o o o o o o the the the the the land land land land Growing up the the the the land land was your your your provider your your your mentor your your your healer the the the the berries you you you you you you you pick the the the the medicines you you you you you you you get everything you you you you you you you got from the the the land you you you didn’t rely on on anyone else “In 1964 the the the Chemawawin people were relocated by the the the government to make way way for a a a a a a a a a a a a a a dam We had no say That’s what people don’t like and they’ll resist it—all the the the the way way They damaged our area with with the the the the the ooding before now they they are are going to desecrate it it it with with cutting all the the the trees down To me me that’s not not right I’m not not anti-development but we we we need to maintain a a a a a a a a a a a healthy forest as well How do do we we we we do do that?
