Figure 13. Recent photograph of Granite Mountain and Sullivan Buttes as seen from Signal Hill. Ibelieve that this is the land scape that Lt. John Tidball sketched on January 1,1854. "Lieut. Tidball has taken a sketch showing the Sierra de la Laja and Picacho, s o m e twenty-five miles distant... the descent of the valley...causes the southern portion, represented in the sketch, to appear a formidable range." The photograph here, taken in 1996 ,is a telephoto shot framed to try to match Lt. Tidball's sketch.
