numerous basalt flows in the Hillsboro area north of Lake Valley (Hedlund, 1977a). The Animas half-graben north of the Lake Valley study area (fig. 2) is the southern part of the 80 km long Winston graben, the westernmost extensional basin of the Rio Grande rift at this latitude.
The map area of plate 1 is near the southeast edge of the Emory cauldron and includes the Rio Grande rift-related Ani mas half-graben (Animas basin) (Seager and others, 1982; Harrison, 1990). Rocks exposed in the map area include Paleozoic carbonate and clastic rocks, scattered thin outcrops
