Within five years, Ukraine is to have 1,200 MW of installed wind capacity,
Meggelaars says. New investment will cross the Black Sea from Turkey, predicts Mustafa Serdar Ataseven, President, Turkish Wind Energy Association. Turkey now has 7,000 MW of wind power installed capacity and 29 new wind power plants are under construction with 885 MW in new capacity.
The EBRD will not make new loans for solar projects until the Rada approves an electricity auction system , Olga Yeriomina, a senior banker for EBRD’s power and energy projects, tells the forum. The EBRD is allocating up to $4mn to help Ukraine develop the infrastructure for auctions. She said that a EUR 250mn EBRD fund for renewable energy projects is almost used up. No decision has been made on new loans to wind projects.
Ukrhydroenergo’s plan to spend $500mn on turbines from China,
spurning turbines from Turboatom, is “economic idiocy” says Viktor Halasiuk, an economist who chairs the Rada’s committee on industrial policy and entrepreneurship. Noting that the Kharkiv company works at 30% capacity with a revenue of $85mn, he said the deal with China National Electric Engineering Co. represents five years of work for Turboatom, Ukraine’s sole turbine maker. Ukrhydroenergo seeks the turbines for a planned doubling =- to 2,200 MW – of the capacity of the Dnister Pumped Storage Power Station, which is near the Moldovan border, 150 km southwest of Vinnytsia.
For the fourth year in a row, Ukraine is increasing electricity exports to its Western neighbors . Through October, Ukraine exported $266mn worth of electricity, 27% more that during the first 10 months of last year. In order of importance, electricity buyers from Ukraine are: Hungary, Poland, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania.
Nuclear power costs 300% less than electricity generated at coal fired power stations . The European Union provides Ukraine with comprehensive assistance in improving the reliability and operational safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs); however, they receive 300% less for the electricity they produce than coal-fired power plants get for their power. Nuclear power has the potential to be financially successful, because its share in the Ukrainian electricity market consistently exceeds 50% of demand, and at peak consumption reaches 70%. The average cost of electricity for Ukrainian consumers is already at the level of some Eastern European countries and the market price continues to rise. In recent years, Ukraine has been making significant efforts to reform its energy market in order to bring it into line with the European model. However, the problem is that for nuclear energy in Ukraine non-market-based methods are used to calculate electricity pricing.
