Sovcomflot, Gazprom Neft
agree to co-operate on LNG
fuel bunkering
Sovcom ot Group and Gazprom Ne Marine Bunker have signed a co-operation agreement regarding the implementation of projects for bunkering ships with LNG fuel.
e signing ceremony took place at the 2019 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. e agreement was signed by Igor Tonkovidov, Executive Vice President and CTo/Coo of Sovcom ot, and Andrey Vasiliev, CEo of Gazprom Ne Marine Bunker.
e agreement reinforces the mutual interest of both parties regarding their co- operation in the bunkering of Sovcom ot’s tankers with LNG fuel. Such activities also correspond with the state programme for expanding the use of LNG fuel within the transportation sector.
Compared to conventional marine fuels, the use of LNG fuel allows to signi cantly reduce emissions of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter.
Igor Tonkovidov commented: “We rmly believe that LNG fuel is the optimal solution, both environmentally and economically, for large-tonnage cargo shipping, primarily in high-tra c areas with existing regulatory restrictions on emissions, such as the Baltic and the North Seas, as well as in the Arctic Sea basin. For a number of years, Sovcom ot has been systematically working on switching
its tanker eet to LNG fuel, and we welcome the opportunity to expand cooperation with Gazprom Ne in this area, combining our e orts to introduce advanced environmental standards into Russian shipping.” sovComflot, june 7, 2019
Sovcomflot and VEB.RF sign financial agreements for the construction of LNG- fuelled MR tankers
Today, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Sovcom ot and VEB.RF Group announced the signing of agreements whereby VEB Leasing will nance the construction of three new LNG-fuelled MR tankers.
Sovcom ot initially placed the order for these three tankers with the Zvezda Shipyard (Primorsky region) on 28 december 2018. e delivery of the vessels is scheduled
for 2022-2023. Each tanker will have a deadweight of 51,000 tonnes, and they are intended to transport petroleum products
and gas condensate, operating under 20-year time charter agreements with NoVATEK. e vessels will have an Ice Class 1B classi cation, enabling them to provide safe and reliable year-round transportation for hydrocarbons in challenging ice conditions, in particular within the Baltic Sea.
 e vessels’ technical speci cations
have been designed to meet international regulations on emissions, which come
into e ect in 2020. In comparison with conventional bunkers, the use of LNG fuel can signi cantly reduce the amount of vessel emissions, for example: sulphur oxides (Sox) reduced by 100%; nitrogen oxides (Nox) reduced by 76%; carbon dioxide (Co2) reduced by 27%; low-dispersed particles eliminated completely.
Sergey Frank, President and CEo of Sovcom ot, said: “Sovcom ot is one of the world leaders in the implementation of “green” technologies in the transportation
of energy by sea. e company already successfully operates six new-generation Aframax tankers, which are powered by
LNG fuel. Five more LNG-powered vessels have been ordered by Sovcom ot from the Zvezda shipyard and will be built over the next few years. We welcome the plans of Russian shipbuilders to create modern large- tonnage LNG-fuelled vessels which, of course, represent the future of world shipping.” sovComflot, june 7, 2019
