  6.2 Debt
    According to the Bank of Russia, the external debt of the Russian Federation as of January 1, 2021 amounted to $470.1bn, having decreased by $21.3bn since the beginning of the year. Decrease in debt liabilities to non-residents was observed in all sectors of the economy, with the most noticeable decrease in foreign debt of other sectors on borrowed loans.
Russia’s public debt up to 17.8% of GDP in 2020. Russia's public debt increased by 39.9% in 2020 to RUB18.99 trillion ($257bn), which is 17.8% of GDP, according to the documents published by the Accounts Chamber, Tass reported on February 24.
"The public debt of the Russian Federation in 2020 increased by RUB5.418bn trillion ($73bn), or 39.9%, and amounted to RUB18.985 trillion, or 17.8% of GDP," the Accounts Chamber said.
According to the Accounts Chamber, in 2019 the public debt grew by 7.8% or RUB976bn ($13bn), and its volume reached RUB13.567 trillion ($183bn) or 12.3% of GDP.
