NCOC discloses plans for Kashagan satellites
KAZAKHSTAN
THE North Caspian Operating Co. (NCOC) is planning to sink at least 30 wells as part of devel- opment plans at two elds in the vicinity of the giant Kashagan oil project.
e North Caspian contract area operated by NCOC contains Kashagan and several smaller deposits. e largest of these satellite elds is thought to be Kalamkas-More, with an esti- mated 1.2 billion barrels of recoverable oil.
A er Kashagan’s launch in late 2016, NCOC began cra ing plans for the joint development of Kalamkas-More with another field called Khazar, which lies on the neighbouring Zhem- chuzhina block operated by Royal Dutch Shell and Oman Oil. Shell is also a shareholder in NCOC.
In comments to Kazakh news agency Kazinform on June 14, NCOC’s managing director Richard Howe said a project plan was being drafted and would be presented to the government.
“It is assumed that the development of these elds will require the drilling of more than 30
wells,” he said. Citing unidentified experts, Kazinform claimed production from the project was slated to reach 100,000 barrels per day.
Howe added that NCOC had “explored numerous options” for developing two more of Kashagan’s satellites, known as Aktote and Kairan. These fields are similar to Kashagan, he said, with high-pressure reservoirs found at depths of 3 to 4.5 km under the sea bed. Like Kashagan, their oil also has a high sulphur con- tent. According to Howe, they may be developed as part of subsequent phases at Kashagan.
Kashagan recently reached an all-time pro- duction high of 400,000 bpd following a 45-day maintenance shutdown. NCOC has said before that output could climb to as high as 470,000 bpd under its initial development phase. e consor- tium is currently in talks with the government on an expansion project.
Besides Shell, NCOC’s members include China’s CNPC, Italy’s Eni, ExxonMobil, Kazakh- stan’s KazMunayGas (KMG), Japan’s Inpex and France’s Total.™
