Retail sales crashed in March with the retail turnover falling from 13.5% expansion in February to 6.1% in March as the virus arrived in Ukraine. The results for April are likely to show an even more dramatic fall as the March numbers are from the period before the lockdown of major cities was imposed.
Ukraine retail sales advanced 10.6% y/y in real terms in 1Q20, slowing from 13.5% y/y in 2M20, Ukraine’s State Statistics Service reported on April 21. In March, retail advanced 6.1% y/y (vs. 15.7% y/y growth in February) and 4.4% m/m in real terms. Regionally, the highest retail growth in 1Q20 occurred in the Kyiv (15.3% y/y), Dnipropetrovsk (15.0% y/y), and Kharkiv (14.9% y/y) regions. It was slowest in the Zakarpattia (-2.1% y/y), Chernivtsi (0.7% y/y), and Ukraine-controlled Luhansk (5.9% y/y) regions.
