Erdogan set to take helm of Turkey's ruling party AKP
Turkey's ruling AKP will hold its extraordinary congress on May 21 and name President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as its leader, local media reported on April 27.
The constitutional amendments approved in the controversial April 16 referendum allow the president to retain ties to a political party. The executive presidency voted in by the popular poll means Erdogan is no longer obliged to cut all links to political parties.
He is to resume membership of the AKP immediately after the final results are announced for the referendum, Erdogan told Reuters in an interview on April 25.
The country’s Supreme Election Board (YSK) on April 27 released the final results of the vote. They confirmed the narrow victory claimed by the Erdogan-led Yes camp.
Yes received 51.41% (25.2mn) of the votes while No garnered 48.59% (23.8mn). Turnout was 85.3%.
The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has contested the results but its appeals for the annulment of the referendum have been rejected. It has said it will take the matter to the European Court of Human Rights.
