EU launches WTO case against Turkey over claimed unlawful measures in pharmaceutical industry. The European Union has brought a World Trade Organisation (WTO) case against Turkey, targeting what it claims are unlawful measures in the pharmaceutical industry. The estimated value of pharmaceutical exports likely to be affected by the disputed measures reaches €460mn and, if the measures were further implemented, could potentially affect all EU exports to Turkey worth more than €2.5bn, it added.
Turkish investor plans to build wind parks in North Macedonia. A Turkish company plans to build ten wind turbines in North Macedonia, media reported on April 11. The investor, which was not named in the reports, plans to implement the project through its local unit Kaltun energy Skopje. The value of the investment was not disclosed. The installed capacity of each turbine is planned at 3.3 MW with total power production of the ten turbines set at 74 GWh. North Macedonia’s gross electricity generation jumped 34.1% y/y to 683,915 MWh in January of which wind parks accounted only for 13,685 MWh.
Arming and rearming: Military spending grows across CEE and SEE in 2018. Big military spending hikes took place in Turkey, Armenia, the Baltics and across Central and Eastern Europe in 2019, while notable expenditure increases also occurred in Bulgaria and Romania, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Iran, meanwhile, facing dire economic straits because of the hostility of the Trump administration, saw a clear reduction in the amount it spent on its military.
Turkish spending growth world’s biggest. Military spending in Turkey increased by 24% in 2018 to $19.0bn, marking the highest annual percentage increase among the world’s top 15 military spenders, the institute said.
