Skoda Turkey slashed its sales forecast for 2021 by 10,000 units. “We had initially forecast 40,000 units of sales but given the ongoing problems we revised our expectations down to around 30,000 units,” Zafer Basar, general manager of Skoda Turkey, said.
Demand is strong but not supply, according to Ali Haydar Bozkurt from Toyota Turkey.
“If we had enough cars, our sales could top 60,000 units this year. In light of the recent developments, our sales will be short of this,” he said.
Setting targets is not about demand anymore, it is all about supplies, Turgay Mersin, head of the Turkish Authorised Automotive Dealers’ Association, OYDER, told Dunya.
“Our sales are limited to our inventories. We expect total sales to be between 800,000 and 850,000 units this year,” said Mersin.
In August, a total of 59,000 passenger car and light commercial vehicle (LCV) units were sold in Turkey.
Passenger car sales inched up 0.9% y/y to 45,000 units while LCV sales dropped 20% y/y to around 14,000 units.
Local suppliers agreed that the shortages of semiconductors and other raw materials were hindering their operations.
“The shortage of semiconductors is damaging, but we are also having logistics problems. Ships deliver our orders sometimes in 45 days, whereas in the past deliveries would arrive in five to 15 days. Moreover, there are not enough containers,” said Albert Saydam, chair of the Automotive Suppliers’ Association of Turkey, TAYSAD.
The supply chain was broken in many places and it was not easy to manage this kind of problem, Saydam noted, adding that the range of production of vehicles that local carmakers manufacture has declined significantly.

In September, Turkey lifted the ban on bulk olive oil exports, which was imposed in March. Turkey’s olive oil exports, in both packaged and bulk form, were 20,000 tonnes in the first seven months of the 2020/21 crop year (from November 2020 to May 2021), down 31,000 tonnes a year ago.
