US embassy in Tirana warns of cyber risks when Albania launches 5G
The US embassy in Tirana warned Albania again to be careful about cyber security when launching 5G technology next year.
The concerns erupted in early November when
a new 5G technology was presented for the first time in Albania by Vodafone. They are believed
to be in reference to the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, which sells 5G equipment and has been involved in controversy in various other countries.
US charge d’affaires Leyla Moses-Ones said in
a Facebook post on the US embassy page that it is vital to consider whether 5G suppliers are subject to control by a foreign government without independent judicial review and what is the track record of vendors regarding respect for the rule of law.
Robert Strayer, head of IT security at the US State Department, said earlier that Huawei hopes
to produce and sell its 5G network equipment
worldwide, but there are clear reasons why countries and consumers must act with caution.
