Georgia’s leading commercial bank TBC moves into Uzbekistan
The biggest bank in Georgia TBC is moving into Uzbekistan follow- ing the acquisition of a local payment service called Payme. It is purchasing a 51% stake in the fintech company for $5.5mn, the bank announced this month.
The idea is to roll out TBC’s digital banking offering and tap into the Uzbek population, by far the largest in Central Asia, while the coun- try rapidly opens to the rest of the world following changes that have followed the death of its former president Islam Karimov in 2016 and the appointment of his successor Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
“TBC announces that it has entered into an agreement to acquire a 51% stake in LLC Inspired, a leading payment platform in Uzbekistan trading under the Payme brand,” the bank said in its official an- nouncement of the deal.

A registry of around 120,000 clients blacklisted by Russian banks and compiled by the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) has been leaked online, Kommersant daily said on April 12 citing specialised internet forums.
Reportedly the database was compiled in June-December 2017 and has ID information of private individuals and official information on corporate clients. This makes the first known leak of classified data linked to the central bank that enjoys a solid reputation.
The list was reportedly drawn up by the CBR after double-checking the information RosFinMonitoring watchdog, however, none of the officials agencies admit the leak and blame banks that could have possibly received the list.
