NEWS IN BRIEF

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) decided in 2016
“not to increase total CO2 emissions in the international aviation sector from 2020”
as an initiative by the aviation industry requiring rapid action to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) worldwide. Based on such a decision, in the aviation industry the development of a stable supply of SAF
has been expected, derived from biomass sources, including urban waste, vegetable oil, animal fats, used cooking oil, and lumber, and emissions from steel plants and refineries.
In light of these conditions, Revo International, which has a long-term track record of production and supply of biodiesel fuel made from used cooking oil, JGC, which possesses extensive experience building plants and facilities and is actively promoting the development of environmental business,
and JAPEX, which is experienced in oil and natural gas E&P (exploration, development, production and supply) and is pursuing the development of next-generation technologies utilizing knowhow in such areas, decided to conduct a joint study for the establishment
of an SAF production system and to build a value chain in Japan.
The goal of the study aims to quickly realize SAF production with used cooking
oil as feedstock in Japan by deploying proven technology which is already applied to the existing plants in the US and other locations. In this study, the Companies will be supported by airlines as the SAF off-takers, domestic
oil refining industries with an existing jet
fuel supply chain and related governmental agencies, and will focus on establishing an efficient collection network of used cooking
oil. The Companies plan to conduct a feasibility study for the production and supply of SAF that employs used cooking oil as the raw material within 2020, and then aim to build an SAF value chain in Japan through promotion.

Samsung Heavy delivers
the world’s first LNG dual-
fuel shuttle tanker
Samsung Heavy Industries has proved its clean technology to the global market by delivering the world’s first LNG dual-fuel shuttle tanker in the New Year, in which a strengthened regulation by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on shipping emissions takes effect.
On 21, SHI announced that it had delivered a 130,000-dwt LNG dual-fuel shuttle tanker to Teekey Offshore at its Geoje shipyard.
Aurora Spirit, the first-ever LNG dual-fuel shuttle tanker delivered to date, emits 85% less SOx, 98% less NOx, 98% less particulate matter compared to ships powered by conventional fuels while meeting the IMO target of reducing carbon (CO2) emissions.
This next-generation tanker, the cleanest ever built, is capable of running on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) vented into the atmosphere from tanks during loading and voyage by fully capturing them for reuse as an alternative fuel.
“There will be growing demand for ships emitting less pollutants as environmental
regulations become more and more stringent. In this regard, we will do our utmost to keep the highest market share in this area based on our advanced clean technology,” said an official of SHI.
Meanwhile, Samsung has been active in other eco-friendly technologies. Last year
it developed Korea’s first marine battery system which reduces fuel consumption and operating costs before acquiring Approval in Principle by DNV GL for Aframax tankers powered by fuel cells.

The contracts awarded include directional drilling, logging while drilling, surface data logging, drilling and completions fluids, cementing, liner hangers, coring and well completions services.
“We are excited to win this work and
to collaborate with INPEX to deliver our extensive drilling and completions services in addition to our digital capabilities in the strategically significant Browse Basin,” said Jason Jeow, vice president of the Australasia region for Halliburton.
