US President Joe Biden has tapped Jeff Flake, a former anti-Donald Trump Republican senator and Christian missionary, to become the next American ambassador to Turkey.
Flake served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in South Africa during the 1980s. He was a US Senator between 2013 and 2019 and served in the US House of Representatives between 2001 and 2013 as a member of the Republican Party from Arizona.
In August 2020, Flake officially endorsed Joe Biden for president.
