Pertamina secures additional help to tackle oil spill
PROJECTS & COMPANIES
INDONESIA’S state-owned Pertamina has enlisted the help of the Transportation Ministry as well as US services provider Boot & Coots to bring an oil spill in the Java Sea under control.
A gas kick occurred at the re-activated YYA-1 well on the O shore North West Java (ONWJ) block on July 12 and worsened two days later, leading to an oil spill that has contaminated sev- eral beaches in West Java’s Karawang Regency.
e ministry said on July 22 that it had sent a team and several boats to the site to work along- side Pertamina, and the Indonesian Navy and the Maritime Police to contain the situation. Pertamina has already sent 27 ships and 12 sets of oil booms to minimise the spill’s environmen- tal impact, while the navy and police are helping to ensure shing vessels steer clear of the area.
“Until now, no commercial shipping has been a ected by the oil spill and the authority is con- tinuing to prevent the oil spill from spreading further,” the director of the ministry’s Sea and Coast Guard unit, Ahmad, said.
Pertamina removed workers and halted operations at the YYA drilling platform, which is located 2km north of Karawang, the company said on July 17.
Block operator Pertamina Hulu Energi’s (PHE) spokesman I i Sukarya said: “We had activated the incident management team to mit- igate the impact. e main priority is to ensure the safety of workers and the local people, as well as to minimise the impact to the environment.”
e Energy Ministry’s acting director-gen- eral for oil and gas, Djoko Siswanto, said last week that while the authorities did not know

PHE’s director for development A f Saifu- din said at the time that the platform would drill three wells and could support an additional two wells if needed. PHE tied YYA back to the KLB platform in the rst two months of this year with a 13-km undersea pipeline.v
