TRY226bn ($28bn).
Turkey’s airports served 17.7mn passengers in Q1, down 47% y/y. The number of international travellers dropped 57% y/y to 6.1mn and the domestic passenger tally was down 40% y/y to 11.7mn.
Expenditures by domestic tourists in Turkey fell 34.1% y/y in 2020 to TRY32bn (€3bn). International tourism accounts for around 11% of Turkey’s economy. It earned Turkey a record $34bn in 2019, but last year that figure plummeted by around $22bn.
With the dramatic resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic in Turkey, officials fear both domestic and international tourism will again fare very poorly.
