Broadband users in Montenegro rise 14.8% y/y in July
The number of broadband connections including ADSL, WiMAX, WiFi and KDS in Montenegro rose 14.8% y/y to 151,374 as of the end of
July, according to data from the country's telecoms agency, the Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services of Montenegro (EKIP).
The number of broadband connections is constantly rising in the Adriatic country, which has a population of just over 600,000 people.
ADSL connections, which had a 37.42% market share, dropped 2.9% y/y to 56,646 at end-July. WiMax connections fell 12.9% y/y to 2,815, and their market share fell to 1.86% from 2.45%.
The market share of WiFi decreased y/y to 3.59% from 4.27%, while that of KDS connections went up to 29.95% from 27.71%.
At the end of 2017, the number of broadband connections stood at 139,932.
Macedonia’s Telekabel to launch mobile telephony services
Macedonia cable operator, TV and internet pro- vider Telekabel has announced it will soon launch mobile telephony services.
The new entry will increase competition in the mobile phone market in Macedonia where the main rivals are Makedonski Telekom, part of Deutsche Telekom group, and Telekom Austria’s one.VIP. There is also one mobile virtual network operator, US-based Lycamobile.
“We are working intensively on the latest preparations,” Telekabel said in a Facebook post on September 3, adding that as from now all services will be provided without obligatory contracts with clients.
The prefix for Telekabel mobile phone services will be 074.
Mobile phone penetration in Montenegro up to 184.12% at end-July
Montenegro's mobile phone penetration rate increased by 12.3pp y/y to 184.12% at end-July, according to data from the telecommunications agency (EKIP). The total number of subscribers was up by 4% y/y to around 1.1mn.
Montenegro’s high mobile penetration rate is partly due to the large number of tourists (in comparison to its tiny population) that visit the country.
In July, the subscriber base of Norway's Telenor, Montenegro's leading operator, rose 2.9% y/y to 418,149. The company had a market share
of 36.63% at end-July, down from 37.02%
a year earlier.
The number of subscribers of the second largest telco in the country, T-Mobile (part of Crnogorski Telekom), increased 0.8% y/y to 366,285. The
