      DEMAND
India’s electricity generation falls 14.3%
India’s electricity generation in May fell
at a slower pace than in April, as higher temperatures lead to greater demand for residential power and the government eased some lockdown restrictions to control the spread of the coronavirus.
Overall electricity generation fell 14.3% in May, Reuters reported, compared with a decline of 24% in April.
Despite higher consumption by residential consumers, power use was lower as many industries and commercial establishments – which account for over half of India’s annual consumption – were shut or not operating at full capacity.
Electricity generation from coal – India’s primary source of electricity – fell 22%, an analysis of daily load despatch data from POSOCO showed. Coal’s contribution to overall electricity generation in May fell to 64.2%, compared with an average of over 70.7% last year.
Meanwhile, India’s solar power supply grew 12.7% and hydro-powered electricity supply rose 3.6%, while gas-fired power output was 13.8% higher, the data showed. However, wind-powered electricity supply fell 10.8%.
The share of fossil fuels in overall electricity generation in May was 70.71%, compared with 76% the previous year, an analysis of data from POSOCO showed.

Israel’s Aquarius Engines to supply generators in Asia
Israel’s Aquarius Engines has signed a partnership deal with Nokia to provide energy to millions of people in Asia without access to the electrical grid, Reuters reported.
Initially Nokia will roll out lightweight Aquarius generators in remote populated areas and telecommunications centres in southeast Asia.
Aquarius forecast that by 2022 the company will supply more than 250mn euros ($277.5mn) worth of generators to this market through the partnership with Nokia.
The programme will be implemented
in stages with the initial plan to station generators on remote islands in the Philippines. Initial field tests will begin on a Philippine island that is a two-hour boat ride away from the nearest grid connection where thousands of residents do not have access to electricity or clean drinking water.
“This initial project provides affordable, manageable power to rural and remote locations,” said Stuart Hendry, vice president of Nokia Enterprise, Asia Pacific. “The Aquarius Engines technology enables us to open huge markets that were once totally off-limits.
Separately, Aquarius said former Bank of Israel governor Jacob Frenkel joined its board of directors.
In November the firm signed a deal with Japanese auto parts maker Musashi Seimitsu to co-develop its linear engine.

South Korea’s state-owned banks to provide Doosan Heavy with additional support
Two state-owned banks in South Korea said on June 1 they would provide up to KRW1.2 trillion ($977.41mn) in liquidity to support Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co Ltd as the company suffers from financial troubles after its nuclear and coal power business took a hit from the country’s energy policy shift, Reuters reported.
South Korea’s leading constructor of coal-fired power plants previously received about KRW2.4 trillion won ($1.94bn) from state-owned Korea Development Bank and Export-Import Bank of Korea, the company’s regulatory filings showed.
