Ukraine crops harvest rises 13% y/y as of November 1. Ukrainian farmers harvested 66.7mmt in crops (13.2% higher y/y) from 14.1mn ha (92% of total land sowed) in 2019, while the average crop yield increased 8.4% y/y to 4.73 t/ha as of November 1, the Agrarian Ministry reported the same day. Farmers harvested 26.7mmt of corn (15.6% more y/y) from 3.9mn ha (or 78% of sowed land), while the corn yield slid 2.7% y/y to 6.86 t/ha in 2019. The harvest results of key oilseed crops diverged. In particular, the sunflower yield rose 8.9% y/y to 2.44 t/ha and its total harvest increased 6.1% y/y to 14.0mmt. The soybean yield decreased 8.7% y/y to 2.32 t/ha, while its total harvest dropped 12.2% y/y to 3.6mmt.
Despite the vaunted fertility of Ukraine’s black earth, farmland rents generally are lower than in neighboring countries. According to the recent Rating poll, 30% of owners say they earn $40-120 per hectare per year; 23% earn $120-200, and 21% earn more than $200. By contrast, Eurostat reports that the annual farmland rent in Poland is $259 per hectare and $268 in Bulgaria.
The largest farming country in Europe, Ukraine has 30.4mn hectares of privately owned farmland, divided into 13.9mn land plots, the State GeoCadaster reported on Nov. 1. In addition, the state owns 10.2mn hectares of farmland. The State GeoCadaster plans to complete an inventory of state-owned land by the end of this year.
