The National Taxi Council has lodged a complaint to President Putin about Chinese ride hailing company Didi, claiming that the company’s collection of personal data poses a threat to Russian national security. The council had filed a previous complaint with the Federal Antimonopoly Service. Chief among concerns raised in a letter to Putin was the real time data collection of users’ movement, which is then processed abroad. Didi’s Russian subsidiary has indicated they would seek approval from users prior to transferring data overseas, but the taxi council expressed concerns that this guarantee does not amount to anything. The Chinese internet regulator recently banned new users from joining Didi’s app and ordered the app be removed from Chinese stores, citing data collection violations. Didi recently went public on the New York Stock Exchange. The company is active in 36 Russian cities, and has had more than 2 million passengers in Russia.
