Ukraine’s ferrous metals exports dropped 10.3% in the first 9 months of 2019, compared to the same period last year, which saw $7.74bn in revenue, reports Interfax Ukraine. Ferrous metals can make up 20% of Ukraine’s overall exports. Producers are vulnerable to a global economic slowdown and sluggish world demand for metals.
Russia will allow landlocked Kazakhstan to export 140,000 tons of coal every month to Ukraine by rail. The new quota is 23% lower than the 195,000 tons exported each month from July to September. Over the summer, Russia’s ‘Economic Development’ Ministry rejected 37% of the Ukraine tonnage requested by Kazakh coal companies.
China, Ukraine’s largest trading partner, is opening up to imports of new agricultural products from Ukraine, stating with canola, a grain used for cooking oil, according to Olena Kuryata, head of international cooperation for Ukraine’s Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service. Ideally, canola exports will start this year. She tells agroportal.ua that China also is considering for next year: apples, blueberries, chickens, sweet cherries, eggs, fish products and honey.
Belarus and Ukraine hope to expand bilateral trade this year by 20%,
matching last year’s rate, the two countries’ presidents said Friday at the Second Forum of the Regions of Ukraine and Belarus. Held in Zhytomyr, 150 km south of Belarus, the forum witnessed the signing of $543mn in contracts – 10 times more than last year’s forum, held in Gomel. About 300 business representatives participated in the forum.
With Belarus transshipping many Ukrainian products to Russia, Belarus now is Ukraine’s fifth-largest trading partner, after China, Russia, Germany, and Poland. “The trade turnover between our countries exceeded $5bn last year,” President Zelenskiy. With Belarus President Lukashenko standing next to him, Zelenskiy said: “I agree with Alexander Grigorovich - we can and should overcome the mark of $6-8bn.”
