Belarus plans to create ‘an international port’ in Nizhniya Zhary, a village on the Dnipro, about 100 km north upriver from Kyiv. It seeks major investment to dredge and straighten the Pripyat, turning this meandering river into an international waterway linking the Baltic and Black seas. But, two weeks ago, low water levels on the Pripyat created obstacles for a barge delivering outsized cargo from Kherson to the oil refinery in Mozyr, Belarus, about 150 km up river from Kyiv.
Ukraine’s food exports jumped 22% through September y/y, to $15.6bn,
reports the Club of Agricultural Business Associations. With this jump, food now accounts for 42% of all of Ukraine’s exports, up from 37% last year. In 2018, Ukraine exported a record $18.8bn worth of food. The year, exports are boosted by a 61% jump in sales of corn, most of it from last year’s harvest.
Since the July 1 start of the marketing year, Ukraine has exported 15mn tons of grain, 36% more than during the same period last year. Similarly, oil seed exports are up by 66% during the same period, to 3mn tons, according to the Ukraine’s Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection. Last week, Dmitry Sologub, a deputy central bank governor, predicted the overall grain harvest could hit 80mn tons this year, up 14% over last year’s record 70mn tons.
Poultry exports increased by 24.5% in the first nine months of 2019, while pork exports saw a 6% boost, reports the State Fiscal Service. Revenue from these exports reached $443mn.
Ukraine’s juice exports generated 60% more revenue in the first eight months of 2019 than in the same period last year, reports the Agrarian Business Club. Juice export revenues hit $63mn. Main exports are apple and tomato juices. Main buyers include the United States, Austria, and Canada.
Ukraine’s ferrous metals exports dropped 10.3% in the first 9 months of 2019, compared to the same period last year, which saw $7.74bn in revenue, reports Interfax Ukraine. Ferrous metals can make up 20% of Ukraine’s overall exports. Producers are vulnerable to a global economic slowdown and sluggish world demand for metals.
