Polish foreign minister reportedly set for sack in cabinet reshuffle
The dismissal of Poland’s foreign minister Witold Waszczykowski has been decided on as part of an upcoming government reshuffle, local media claimed on April 24.
Speculation over changes in the government lineup has intensified recently in Poland, and has increasingly focused on Waszczykowski. The foreign minister is seen as the fall guy for Poland’s humiliating failure to derail the re-election of Donald Tusk for a second term as the head of the European Council in March.
“The decision to dismiss Waszczykowski has been made; he will be given the post of Poland’s UN ambassador when Poland becomes a non- permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2018,” newspaper Rzeczpospolita claims, citing unnamed government sources. The vote on Poland's seat on the UN body is scheduled for June.
The newspaper also writes that the foreign minister might not be the only one official to go. The question making the rounds in government circles is how many more ministers will be dismissed.
Poland’s ruling party Law and Justice (PiS) is preparing the reshuffle concurrently with a party congress during which it will herald a “new opening” for the government, in personal and programme terms,” Rzeczpospolita reports.
