Poverty turned to hunger: Queues in front of the municipalities’ discount bread kiosks are the new norm. It is thought there are around 30mn people in Turkey (population 84mn, not including millions of refugees) who are going hungry.
Worker strikes: The Health and Social Work Labourers' Union (SES) held strikes on December 6-8. On December 15, the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) held a strike.
Staff at the BBC's Istanbul bureau held a strike on December 7.
On January 26, thousands of delivery workers at Trendyol, Turkey’s largest e-commerce platform, secured a 38.8% pay rise after rejecting an 11% hike proposed by management with industrial action.
