The Central Asian story in 2019 was dominated by the emergence of Uzbekistan from its purdah. With its young and vibrant population the country has been implementing a string of reforms, but that has also catalysed a move to greater regional cooperation as the four Stans that surrounded it start to open their markets and begin talks on region-wide development strategies.
Kazakhstan remains the regional leader by a long chalk and its economy continues to lead the way in the region, while the economies of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan remain mired in the bog of authoritarian rulers.
