Over the last ten years the population size started to recover with national population growth from 2008 until last year. The size of the population peaked at around 147mn and is now declining again as the demographic crisis of the 1990s hits the curve. However, while the population was growing the map below clearly shows the population have been abandoning the regions (red) and accumulating in regional capitals (green). Moscow now accounts fro 12% of the country’s population, which is by European standards quiet low as the share living in the capital is 20-30% in many western capitals and up to 50% in small countries.
