Production of antimony in Tajikistan would give Tibet Huayu Mining a
27% share of the global market as it already produces the material
elsewhere. The antimony market is dominated by Chinese miners.

                               3.1.4 Energy & power

Tajikistan is hoping to rely on the Central Asia-South Asia (CASA-1000)
electricity transmission project to triple its electricity exports to 10
                               terawatt-hours annually by 2030.

Managing director of Pakistan’s National Transmission and Despatch
Company (NTDC), Manzoor Ahmad, told Business Recorder in an
interview in November that CASA-1000 has been delayed for one year
due to the suspension of Afghanistan funds by the World Bank and
                               USAID.

CASA-1000 is a $1.16bn project currently under construction. It aims to
enable the export of summer surplus hydroelectricity from Kyrgyzstan
and Tajikistan to Pakistan via Afghanistan.

The project is designed to export up to 1,300 MW of electricity during
the summer months from both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It envisages
the construction of a 750-kilometre HVDC line between Sangtuda,
Tajikistan, and the city of Peshawar, Pakistan, via the Salang Pass and
                               the Afghan capital Kabul.

Reports from Tajik media late in 2021 said that the delivery of
necessary equipment and auxiliary tools for the construction of the Tajik
section of CASA-1000 had been extended until 31 July 2023. The
reports cited a Tajik government resolution.

India’s Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited (KPTL) is the company
engaged for the delivery of equipment and tools for the construction of
                               the Tajik section.

KPTL began construction of the section in 2018. The construction
works were originally expected to be completed by the end of this year.

                               3.1.6 Major Sectors

Tajikistan’s agriculture sector, which is the only major source of
employment in the country aside from migrant work slots offered by
Russian enterprises, has likely been substantially affected by the
heatwave that hit the Central Asian region in 2021 and the resulting
droughts. No major reports on damage to the agriculture sector in the
country have emerged (in comparison to other Central Asian nations
such as Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan for which during the year there
were multiple reports on such damage).
