6.1.7 Metallurgy & mining sector news
The volume of Turkey’s steel product exports fell 16% y/y to 1.3mn tonnes in January, while the value of exports dropped 1% to $749mn.
The sector’s steel deliveries to the European Union plunged 37% y/y in January. In 2020, the decline in exports to the bloc was 40%.
The Turkish Steel Producers' Association predicts that Turkey’s steel production may exceed 38mn tonnes in 2021.
Turkey ranked first in Europe and seventh in the world as it produced 35.8mn tonnes of crude steel in 2020. Its output increased 6% y/y in 2020.
Turkey imported 1.2mn tonnes of steel in January, down 14% y/y but in terms of value imports rose more than 12% y/y to $872mn.
