More than two million workers in Turkey have lost their jobs due to the impact of measures adopted to contain the outbreak, main opposition CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said on April 4.
Around 400,000 businesses had closed and many workers paid wages on a daily basis had been laid off, he added.
Turkey's unemployment rate officially edged up to 13.8% in the December-February period from 13.7% a month earlier, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).
Turkey has banned employers from firing employees for three months due to the economic emergency caused by the pandemic.
Employees put on unpaid leave are to be paid half the minimum salary, the finance ministry said.
The government previously announced that for three months it will pay 60% of the staff salaries of firms forced out of business due to a force majeure, such as the pandemic.
