2.8 Polls and sociology
The 2016-2018 period saw the average life expectancy at birth for Turkish citizens reach 78.3 years, with women living 5.4 years longer than men, according to a new Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) report cited by state news service Anadolu Agency on September 24.
The age of 78.3 years compares to the 78.0 years given by TUIK in its life expectancy update last year.
Life expectancy at birth is now 75.6 years for men and 81 years for women, with the gap somewhat larger than the worldwide female-male life expectancy gap, TUIK reportedly said.
"For 15-year-olds, at the minimum working age, the average remaining life expectancy was 64.4 years overall, 61.7 years for men and 67.1 years for women," it added.
For 65-year-olds, the average remaining life span was 17.9 years overall, 16.2 years for men and 19.4 years for women, TUIK also said.
440 pairs of high heel shoes hung on busy Istanbul street to symbolise women murdered in domestic and sexual violence. Turkish artist Vahit Tuna has mounted 440 pairs of high heels on the facade of a building on a busy Istanbul street to symbolise the number of women murdered in domestic or sexual violence in Turkey in 2018.
