Croatia chooses Chinese consortium to build Peljesac bridge
A consortium of companies led by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) has won the tender to build the Peljesac bridge in Croatia for HRK2.08bn (€274.4mn), the Croatian road operator Hrvatske Ceste (HC) announced on January 12.
The 2.4km Peljesac bridge will connect the Croatian mainland with the Peljesac peninsula, giving Croatia a continuous land link that bypasses Bosnian territory. The infrastructure project has been an ongoing topic of dispute between Bosnia and Croatia since 2007, when the construction of the bridge was first announced.
Croatia wants to build the bridge so its citizens can reach the south of the country without crossing into Bosnia. On the other hand, Bosnia has protested that the bridge would prevent large ships from entering the port of Neum.
The winning consortium consists also of CCCC Highway Consultants Co. Ltd., CCCC Second Highway Engineering Co. Ltd. and CCCC Second Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd, the Croatian road company said.
Italian construction company Astaldi, in partnership with IHI Infrastructure Systems of Japan, has won the contract to design and build a bridge over the Danube in the Romanian city of Braila. The contract for the project, which is estimated to cost RON2bn (€433mn, VAT excluded), was signed on January 15, profit.ro reported.
The whole project stretches over 23.4km and will be the most complex infrastructure project in Romania since the fall of communism. It was first proposed in 1980.
Once completed, the suspension bridge will have a total span of 1.12km, ranking (at this moment) among Europe’s five longest. The rest of the project includes a road to link the bridge with the main transport routes.
The design should be ready within 12 months and the construction should not take more than three years.
The other bidder was a consortium formed by Chinese companies in partnership with Romanian company Euro Construct Trading '98 and Spanish company Eptisa Servicios de Ingenier.
