The State Investigation Bureau suspects former President Petro Poroshenko of involvement in the organisation of coal supplies to Ukraine’s state-owned enterprises from Russian-occupied areas in the Donbas in 2014-2015. Poroshenko has earlier denied wrongdoing. The case alleges that Poroshenko conspired with Viktor Medvedchuk, co-leader of the pro-Kremlin Opposition Platform – For Life party and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s right-hand man in Ukraine.
Zelenskiy had a third telephone call with Biden on January 3. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy had a third recent telephone conversation with US President Joseph Biden, which lasted more than an hour and a half. The key topic of the talks was the situation in the east and at our state's borders. "I appreciate the support of the United States for our proposal to hold a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission in the coming days," the Ukrainian President said. The parties also discussed Ukraine's steps within the Minsk and Normandy formats and stressed the importance of further diplomatic efforts.
Russia withdraws a portion of troops from the border with Ukraine. The Southern Military District is returning 10,000 troops to their permanent bases after a month of "field training, reported the Radio Echo Moscow. The military are returning after exercises at the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Rostov regions, the Stavropol and Krasnodar regions, the North Caucasus, and Russia's military bases in Armenia, occupied Crimea, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia, the report said. According to the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, 122,000 Russian soldiers are positioned at 200 kilometres and 143,500 soldiers at 400 kilometres from Ukraine's border.
Ukraine fails to elect an anti-corruption prosecutor. The commission for selecting the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) failed to elect the SAPO head at its Dec. 21 meeting. Out of two candidates, a detective of the National Anticorruption Bureau (NABU), Oleksandr Klymenko, gained 246 points, while his competitor from the Prosecutor General's Office, Andriy Syniuk, gained 229 points. Although there is clarity about the winner of the selection process, the commission failed to vote for him. After a 10-hour meeting, the commission decided to put off the final voting, referring to procedural needs.
Ukraine and France will build five ships in Mykolayiv. Ukraine and France have signed a contract to construct five vessels for the State Border Guard Service. Locally, production will take place in Mykolayiv by the Ukrainian company Nubilon, announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. The first ship will be launched in Odessa on December 9.
The Ukrainian Navy announced on Facebook on December 10 that the Russian Navy had restricted access to up to 70% of the Azov Sea due to naval drills. The drills include shelling near Ukrainian naval bases, ukrinform.net reported on December 12. The announcement comes after the Russian Navy accused the Ukrainian Navy of attempting to send a naval ship, the Donetsk, through the Kerch Strait. The Donetsk had been intercepted by the Russians, though no physical contact was made. The Ukrainian Navy announced that Donetsk had completed its manoeuvres, which were wholly in the Azov Sea, and was on its way home, and that no attempt to leave the sea had been made.
