9.1.3 Transport sector news
● Planes
16 airports are currently being built in Ukraine. “For the first time in many years, the new national airline will be able to fly to the new regional airports that we are building. In total, we are currently building in 16 cities of Ukraine," said President Zelensky. He noted that a new airport of international importance will be built in Transcarpathia between Uzhgorod and Mukachevo, and two more airports in eastern Ukraine.
Air traffic over Ukraine in November resumed at 87% of the pre-crisis level. In November, the airspace of Ukraine performed 19,942 flights, which is 87.2% of the volume of the same period of 2019. At the same time, Ukrainian airlines in November 2021 flew 5,926 flights (22.8% less than in November of 2019), international 14,016 flights (less by 7.7%). The number of domestic flights was 2,611 (+15.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2019), 9,940 international flights (-17.3%) and transit flights are 7,391 flights (-13.9%), reported UkSATSE.
Antonov will build five An-158 regional jets by 2024 for Ukraine’s new state airline, Ukrainian National Airlines, according to a memorandum signed yesterday by Ukroboronprom, the state defence conglomerate, and the Infrastructure Ministry. The 99-seat plane would be used for domestic flights and to flights to nearby countries, such as Moldova and Georgia. President Zelenskiy uses a slightly smaller An-148 for flights around the country. Air Ocean Airlines, a new Ukrainian airline, uses two Russian-made An-148s for its regional flights.
Ukraine International airports passenger traffic recovering. Kyiv International Airport (Sikorsky) served 1.24mn passengers. In January-November 2021, Kyiv Airport served 1,243,548 passengers, 85% more than in the same period of 2020, reported cfts.org.ua. During the 11 months of 2020, the passenger traffic of the Kyiv airport served 670,900 passengers. Boryspil Airport served 8.7mn passengers in 11 months of 2021. Compared to pre-crisis levels (2019), the number of passengers has recovered by 60%.

UAH3.5bn to upgrade train infrastructure. The draft state budget for 2022 includes an investment of UAH3.5bn ($130mn) for the purchase of new passenger cars, including 70 cars for day high-speed trains, said the Ukraine Ministry of Finance. It is also planned to invest an additional UAH2bn ($74mn)
