650,000 tonnes of coal to be shipped to Ukraine. The coal was sourced from the US, Australia, and Columbia for the heating season of 2021-2022, said the Energy Minister, Herman Galushchenko. The Minister added that today the gas reserves in the underground storage are more than 14.5 billion cubic meters, which is enough for the heating season.
Ukraine is aiming to increase uranium production. The Cabinet of Ministers in December approved a plan to develop a nuclear industrial complex through 2026 that calls for the 100% provision of Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPP) with domestically produced uranium beginning in 2027. "There is a proposal to adopt the concept with a one-day revision to take into account the proposals of the Minister of Finance," said Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko.
While government officials promise no blackouts this winter, one quarter of respondents to a national poll say they have already gone through power outages since the heating season started two months ago. In a telephone survey of 1,200 adults conducted in mid-December for the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, 26% said they had already experienced a black out this winter. Government officials say any power shortages are due to planned system maintenance. Asked if Ukraine should import electricity from Belarus to avert shortages, 32% of respondents said it is necessary to avoid blackouts; 33.5% called it dangerous, since Belarus and Russia are building a union state; and 10% considered it unacceptable because it supports Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus’ self-proclaimed president.
The United States will deploy NuScale small modular reactor technology in Ukraine. The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) announced it would support Ukrainian authorities to assess NuScale's small reactor technology with a view to future exports. A 50 MWe version of NuScale's power module already has standard design approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, though the company will re-submit for a 77 MWe version. It proposes deploying these in multiples of four, six, and 12, or other configurations if customers request them. Ukraine's national nuclear utility Energoatom signed a memorandum of understanding with NuScale to explore the deployment of its technology in September, reported WNN.
An energy efficiency program that will help reduce gas consumption by 30-40%. In 2022, the program will see the thermal modernization of about five thousand high-rise buildings and several hundred social facilities. According to Deputy Head of the President's Office, Rostyslav Shurma, “the program will take 7-10 years. It will provide that the vast majority of 180,000 high-rise buildings in Ukraine and social facilities will be thermo-modernized. As a result, the energy efficiency program will help to reduce gas consumption by 30-40% accumulatively”, Shurma added.
Ukrenergo will apply for ENTSO-E observer status. Ukrenergo plans to apply for an observer member in the European network of electricity transmission system operators ENTSO-E soon, announced Chairman of the Board of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytsky. “We will also be able to join ENTSO-E working and expert groups dealing with electricity market development, balancing, ancillary services, electronic data interchange, RES integration, and many more”, announced Kudrytsky on Facebook.
