8.1.1 Earnings
The net profit of all Ukrainian banks amounted to $1.475bn last year, or 29% less than 2019, reports the National Bank of Ukraine.
Out of 73 banks operating in Ukraine last year, 65 were profitable, reported the Central Bank. The former owners of PrivatBank,billionaires Ihor Kolomoyskiy and Hennadiy Boholyubov, are undertaking court actions to return ownership of the bank. It was nationalized in December 2016 after auditors found a $5.5bn hole in its accounts.
State-run PrivatBank topped the rating of the most profitable Ukrainian banks at the end of 2020, having declared UAH25.306bn in net profit, while the largest loss last year was recorded by Ukreximbank being UAH5.594bn.
According to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), the second position in the list of the most profitable banks was taken by Raiffeisen Bank Aval (UAH4.075bn), the third by Oschadbank (UAH2.832bn). FUIB was fourth at the end of 2020 (UAH2.634bn), and OTP Bank was fifth (UAH1.734bn).
According to the central bank, Prominvestbank (PIB, UAH451.516mn) was second in the list of loss makers, Pravex Bank (UAH184.17mn) was third, BTA Bank was fourth (UAH98.869mn) and Unex Bank (UAH36.609mn) was fifth.
Some 65 out of 73 banks operating in Ukraine were profit makers during this period.
