Spain's Wamos Air steps in for Turkmenistan Airlines flights following EASA blacklisting
German, Dutch development banks invest in Georgia’s Anaklia deep water port
Spain's Wamos Air has stepped in to operate Turkmenistan Airlines flights between the UK and India following the European Aviation Safety Agency's (EASA's) suspension on safety grounds of the Turkmen carrier's permission to fly in the EU.
The airline was grounded for safety reasons by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) after the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) sus- pended its permission to fly in the EU. Thousands of people were left stranded. Affected passengers were advised to contact Turkmenistan Airlines to request refunds. The budget airline also flies to Bangkok and Beijing, among other destinations, from Heathrow and Birmingham via Ashgabat. It also has routes that operate out of Frankfurt and Paris.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said the European Aviation Safety Agency had suspended the airline's flights to and from the EU "pending confirmation that it meets international air safety standards".
The German Development Bank (DEG, part of the KfW group) and the Dutch Development Bank (FMO) have signed an agreement with the Ankalia Development Consortium (ADC) to invest in the devel- opment of Ankalia port, InterPressNews has reported.
ADC is a consortium of Georgia’s TBC Holding, Conti International from the US, SSA Marine from the US, Wondernet Express from the UK and G-Star LTD from Bulgaria. The consortium won a tender
to develop, own and then transfer to Georgia a deep water port on the Black Sea in Anaklia. The decision on awarding the contract to the consortium, seen as led by Georgia’s TBC bank, is said to have created tensions between Giorgi Kvirikashvili, who resigned as the country’s PM last year, and ruling party Georgian Dream leader Bidzina Ivanishvili.
