The World Bank ​approved​ a loan of $500mn for the implementation of a project in Turkey​ to support small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The EBRD on September 8 said it was maintaining its focus on expanding access to finance for Turkish businesses, with a new $54mn loan to Isbank​, the largest private lender in Turkey.
The EBRD’s investments in Turkey so far this year have exceeded €1bn.
The development bank is a major investor in Turkey. Since 2009, it has invested €12.4bn through 311 projects in various sectors of the country’s economy, with almost all investment in the private sector. The EBRD’s €6.7bn portfolio in Turkey is the largest among the 38 economies where the bank invests.
A €40mn long-term EBRD loan is to be provided to the private developer of the Basaksehir Cam and Sakura City Hospital​ on the outskirts of Istanbul, the development bank ​said​ on September 16.
The ​€1.6bn hospital​ was built under a public-private partnership (​PPP​) to serve the country’s largest city.
As the pandemic worsened, part of the new hospital complex opened in April to treat the rising number of COVID-19 patients.
