European Council prolongs sanctions against Russia for 6 months. The council decided to renew sanctions targeting sectors of the Russian economy until July 31. This package of measures was first introduced in July 2014, months after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Cyberattack on government websites. Several government websites were down on the morning of Jan. 14 after what appears to be a large-scale cyber attack carried out by Russia. The targeted websites included the Foreign Ministry, Education Ministry, Veteran Affairs Ministry, and Diia, the government's e-service platform. The websites' homepages were replaced with a threatening message addressed to Ukrainians, claiming that their private data was copied and will be made public.
