althoug due to growth in average sales prices the monetary value of the sales increased.
"In a strong closing effort, December market sales improved by 2.3% year on year. Despite that, cumulative sales in the 4th quarter, however, remained in negative territory, showing a 3.0% drop compared to the same period one year ago," the chairman of the AEB, Joerg Schreiber, commented.
The outlook for 2020 remains weak. "For the current year, we expect similarly challenging market circumstances," AEB wrote. "Full year sales in 2020 are anticipated at a level of 1.72mn units, which would represent a further 2.1% decline from the market level reached in 2019.” This week Russia's largest carmaker AvtoVaz said that it had increased sales of its Lada brand vehicle by 1% in 2019 to 0.362mn units.
The company estimates that the car market overall declined by 2% to 1.76mn passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) sold, but AvtoVaz managed to nudge up its market share by 0.6pp to an estimated 20.6%.
Sales of passenger cars in Russia in money terms increased by 5% in 2019 to record-high RUB2.5 trillion ($40bn), according to preliminary estimates by Avtostat agency cited by Vedomosti daily.
The market expanded in money terms despite the decline in sales seen throughout 2019. The growth of money value is linked by the growth of average sales price by 8%, according to Avtostat. The average sales price of one vehicle is estimated at RUB1.54mn in 2019. Vehicles costing RUB2mn and more account for over 47% of the Russian market.
The average sales price is seen increasing by another 4-5% in 2020 due to growing utility excise duty announced by the government, inflation, and growing market share of crossover and SUVs.
