WHAT TO GET
Quick off the Blocks
Three upcoming auctions that are sure to cure your need for speed.
The GT in Ford GT
may as well stand for “greatest (of all) time.” Back
in 1966, Ford’s GT40 Mark II didn’t just take first place in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race—it took second and third, as well, beat- ing out Ferrari in the process. Fifty years later, the American carmaker rolled out the Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition, with just a few hundred examples emerging from the factory. Now, one of those rare models
is about to finish first in anoth- er race, this time as the top lot in Barrett-Jackson’s LasVegas auction at Mandalay Bay from October 3–5.
“It’s like an F1 car,” Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson says of the GT, which has just 15 miles on its odom- eter.“Your hands stay on the wheel 95 percent of the time because you can do every- thing from the wheel. It’s not hard to drive, but you have to drive it with a bit of finesse.
It’s a dance on the pedals.” It will be a race to the finish line for bidders, too, as the GT has no reserve and could go for upwards of $2.5 million if the January auction of a 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition is any indicator.
The GT won’t be your only chance at obtaining a race-ready car with prove- nance in the coming months. In November, RM Sotheby’s will offer legendary German driver Michael Schumacher’s
championship-
winning 2002 Ferrari F2002.The car captured checkered flags at three Grand Prix events and is estimated to sell for as much as $7.5 million. In January, 21 vehicles from the Paul Walker Collection, including a 2009 Nissan 370Z used in the film- ing of 2011’s Fast Five, will be sold during Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction. barrett- jackson.com; rmsothebys.com
