Metallica rocks out with their casks out.
Metallica has been low-hertz sound waves that imparts bright baking spice
singing about booze for decades—the band’s
“Whiskey in the Jar” cover
is a heavy metal classic—but only recently have the guys who took thrash mainstream started singing to their spirits. In 2017, James Hetfifield, Lars Ulrich, and the rest of the band members partnered with Dave Pickerell, the late master distiller of cult favorite label Whistle Pig, to enhance the aging process of whiskey with sonic enhancement—
reverberate the casks and draw more flflavor from the barrel staves. As it turns out, Metallica’s aggressive riffs and harsh vocals are heavy on the low-frequency sounds needed for such aging, so the band assembled various playlists of its greatest tunes to create 16 batches of the hard stuff. The result is Blackened Whiskey ($50), whose name is more a reference to the band’s 1988 song than to the liquid itself, which is medium-bodied and
and honey notes on the nose. It also delivers a mix of vanilla, caramel, and black-pepper flflavors on the palate—all harmoniously linked by a
rich fruitiness inflfluenced
by the band’s head-banging beats. “This is a whiskey that has our musical stamp,” lead guitarist Kirk Hammett said
at Blackened’s launch last summer. “It’s something the world has not experienced before.”We’ll drink to that. blackenedwhiskey.com —s.t.
