The San Luis National Wildlife Refuge
consist of 1,000 acres of wetland fed by
an intricate set of canals and managed to
produce natural food for migrating water-
fowl. The Refuge contains the most ex-
tensive network of pristine native grass-
land, shrubs and vernal pools within the
San Joaquin Valley.
Sandhill cranes, long-billed curlew, nu-
merous raptor species and the endan-
gered kit fox make their homes here. The
land is well managed by controlled graz-
ing and augmented by planting native
trees and shrubs.
