                                     Buntline Hitch
                 The name of the Buntline Hitch comes from its use on sailing ships as
                 a hitch that would not shake free when both the rope and the sail (a
                 bunt is the middle portion of a sail) it was tied to moved in the wind.


                    Make one turn around the object, then make two Half Hitches (as
                 ▲
                    shown). Note that the second Half Hitch is between the object and
                    the first Half Hitch.



































                     This hitch traps the running end very tightly. Learn this knot, and
                 you will also know how to tie a common necktie knot, described in
                 Chapter 11.
