Introduction
Since all characters are born from a basic archetype it's always a
possibility to fall into the trap of creating a cliche. It can be tempting to
underdevelop a character or f ill roles with as typical a character for it
as possible.
Always Use the Archetype as Only a Baselways Use the Archetype as Only a Base
A
Archetypes are a great start to a character but you should always
build on them. Enhance the archetype with personality and a rich
back story to create a unique character.
B
Break Expectations of the Archetypereak Expectations of the Archetype
You can always use the popular look, build, and personality of an
archetype but you can also break the mold and make a more
interesting character.
-Use a race not typical to the archetype or a less typical color
scheme for features.
-Use a less common and imperfect body shape for the character
-Use an atypical and more interesting personality type than what
you feel people expect from that character type.
Avoid Racial Stereotypesvoid Racial Stereotypes
A
The absolute worst cliche to fall prey to is a racial stereotype.
When you create characters try to be colorblind. The color of a
person's skin should never be used to determine their personality,
abilities, speech, or intelligence. Race can definitely influence some
traits but shouldn't hold any significant bearing on their more
intangible ones or even lock you into a box when it comes to their
physical development.
